Day 11

City: Berlin
Accomodation:
Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin Mitte
Sunrise 04:49 Sunset 21:31

  • Today we shall focus on the Kreuzberg area in the morning and Potstamer Platz area in the afternoon, mainly by foot. Both areas are peppered with architectural gems. The morning we will also see some historically important sites such as where Checkpoint Charlie was and the Topography of Terror which was the Gestapo headquarters. The highlight in the morning is the Berlin Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind. In the afternoon, we have the Potsdamer Platz area which was master planned by Renzo Piano in the 1990s, but there are some important post-war civic buildings by Hans Schroun and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. We have a booking for a tour of the Berlin Philharmonie, the building that changed how music concert halls are designed. Then between 16:00 - 20:00, the New National Gallery by Mies and renovated by David Chipperfield is open to the public for free. If we still have time and energy after, we could head over to Dutch Embassy by OMA which we can see from the exterior. It is close to our accommodation but for the adventurous ones, we could continue onto East Side Gallery, a permanent open-air gallery in Berlin-Friedrichshain, created on a 1,316-meter-long surviving section of the Berlin Wall with 118 artists from 21 countries who were invited to paint murals on the Wall, transforming it into the world’s longest open-air gallery. Beyond that is the gritty, alternative Friedrichshain area which is slowly being gentrified but it still has some of its raw, creative edge, with remnants of its squatter past. The disused railway buildings near Warschauer Straße S-Bahn station in Friedrichshain is a well-known nightlife and cultural hotspot in Berlin that’s worth checking out as part of the East Berlin vernacular.

Sunrise 04:50 Sunset 21:31

  • Today we shall take a look at the housing designed for Interbau 1957, an International Building Exhibition held in West Berlin's Hansa Quarter (Hansaviertel), conceived as a major architectural and urban planning project to demonstrate the ideals of modernist, democratic urban design in the context of postwar reconstruction and Cold War rivalry between East and West Berlin. Notable ones include projects by Oscar Niemeyer, the Aaltos and Walter Gropius. We shall then walk through Tiegarten to arrive at the Nordic Embassies where we should be able to visit to common building Felleshus which opens at 11:00. There is also the Mexican Embassy next door and the currently under renovation and construction Bauhaus Archives nearby. We shall then walk further to the Kaiser Wilheim Memorial Church which is a post-war Modernist box church next to the ruins of the original Neo-Romaneque church. There should choices of places to eat around there for lunch. After lunch, we shall catch the train to Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station where it has a permanent exhibition on the ghost stations during the Divided Berlin era. From there a short walk to Chapel of Reconciliation and the Berlin Wall Memorial, with a preserved section of the wall. From there we walk to Tchoban Foundation (Museum of Architectural Drawing), open 14:00 till 19:00. Again, if you still have energy, we shall head deep East Berlin to Treptow to see the Treptow Crematorium which has been in countless number of films as the villains’ lair. Access is uncertain as it used to be open to the public but now they demand we join this local tour who demands a huge amount of money just to see the interiors. We can simply peer through the glass!

Day 13

City: Berlin > Wolfsburg > Berlin
Accomodation:
Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin Mitte
Sunrise 04:51 Sunset 21:30

  • Today is our day trip to the strange city of Wolfsburg which unlike many German cities, Wolfsburg does not have a medieval city centre. Instead, it features the Autostadt, a modern open-air museum and theme park dedicated to automobiles, especially the manufacturing of Volkswagen. The company was founded in 1938 by Adolf Hitler himself and the Nazi Party with the help of Ferdinand Porsche for the design of the famous Beetle. It is a modern planned city with Aalto’s Cultural Centre serving as a major cultural and civic hub for the city. It is like Aalto’s greatest hits in one place. There are also 2 churches by Aalto (currently still trying to get access to) which are notable. On the way to the churches there is also a Hans Schroun Theatre building thats’s worth checking out. Opposite Autostadt and the train station there is one of Zaha Hadid’s most famous buildings, the Phaeno Science Centre. If we have time we can explore Autostadt before jumping on the train back to Berlin.

Day 14

City: Berlin > Hamburg
Accomodation:
The Cloud One Hamburg-Kontorhaus
Sunrise 04:59 Sunset 21:49

  • Today we go to Hamburg, Germany’s largest and most important port city, often called Germany’s “Gateway to the World” due to its strategic location on the Elbe River, about 110 km from the North Sea, which allows access to both the North and Baltic Seas. As usual when we arrive, we shall go to the hotel and drop our bags, then we shall go check out the UNESCO listed expressionist brick office building Chilehaus. We shall then walk through the historic Speicherstadt warehouses towards HafenCity, crossing the Kibbelsteg bridges with views of red-brick canals. HafenCity is a new waterfront development and we shall find Cinnamon Tower by Bolles+Wilson and Unilever Headquarters by Behnisch. We will probably find some food around this area. We shall then proceed to the main reason why we are visiting Hamburg, the iconic Elbphilharmonie by Herzog & de Meuron. We shall take the escalator up to the Plaza level where we will find 360 degree views of the city and harbour. There maybe a chance of a tour of the concert hall but currently I couldn’t secure a booking for our group so we shall play it by ear. After Elbphilharmonie, we can walk along the riverfront to the Niederhafen Promenade designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. After that, we will head to St. Pauli Bunker, a massive WWII flak bunker that’s recently been topped with a public rooftop garden. We can take the exterior ‘mountain path’ ramp up and enjoy this unique adaptive reuse project. This will be the final even with all of us together as Shaun will be heading off the following day. Let’s have a final hurrah drinks/dinner together!
