  • Today we are going on a small excursion a picturesque old town located on a slope above the Neckar River, Marbach am Neckar where we will find the RIBA Stirling Prize winning Museum of Modern Literature by David Chipperfield which opens at 10:00. We then walk back through the town and cross the river to see Dupli Casa by Jürgen Mayer H. In its context before catching the train back to Stuttgart for lunch. We then head to the amazing Mercedes Benz Museum by UNStudio where it has an extensive exhibition and spatial experiences. We could end the day with a visit to Frei Otto’s Institute of Lightweight Structures at University of Stuttgart’s Vaihingen Campus. Being the weekend and also summer holidays, I doubt there will be anyone there but we should be able to peek in through the glass at least.

Sunrise 05:16 Sunset 21:17

  • Another day where we check out and relocate to another city. Today is a pretty chill day. Upon arriving München, we shall go to our accommodation and drop off our bags. If we can check in early that’s a bonus but no sweat. We will be spending time in the Old Town of München only. Visiting the late Baroque and Rococo opulence that is Asamkirche. Then we shall visit the Munich Jewish Museum and Synagogue nearby before walking up to Theatinerkirch, an Italian High Baroque Church that introduced Baroque into Bavaria. Fünf Höfe by Herzog & de Meuron, a massive urban renewal and adaptive reuse project is right next door and worth exploring. We shall end the day at Hofbräuhaus but I suggest we check in first if we weren’t able to do so earlier and head back there for a bit of cultural immersion.

  • Today we will mainly be in the north western part of München with the 1972 Olympic Park area as well as the Dachau Concentration Camp. Starting with Coop Himmelb(l)au’s BMW Welt before entering the Olympic Park to see mainly the Aquatic Centre and the Stadium. If we have time we will check out the photogenic Westfriedhof Underground Station before looking for food either at Dachau or go back to München Hbf (8 minutes metro) before heading to Dachau from there again. Dachau Concentration is a short bus ride from Dachau station. Architecturally we are mainly looking at the Protestant Chapel of Reconciliation but I think after that everyone should go through the site at their own pace as it can get heavy and we shall meet up to head back to München together.

  • Today we are finally checking out the contemporary architectural offerings of München. Having said that, we are starting with an excursion to Holzkirchen about 45 mins from München Hbf to see this awesome timber shingles church. It should be open from 08:00. After that we return to München Hbf and walk to Lenbachhaus Museum’s golden coloured extension by Foster & Partner followed by the Pinakothek de Moderne and Brandhorst Museum cluster and have lunch in that area. After lunch we shall head over to Herz-Jesu-Kirche where it has the world’s largest church doors, a floating timber box inside a glass box. We can then head out to FC Bayern Munich’s home ground, Allianz Arena by Herzog & de Meuron. Hopefully early night and plenty of rest as we are getting up and checking out super early the following day. Possibly grab some snacks for breakfast as we will be departing before the station shops are open in case you don’t agree with the breakfast offerings from the restaurant car on the train.
